Helping Families and Friends Honor Loved Ones Since 1959

Marie (Woods) Calton

MARIE (Woods) CALTON

Marie (Woods) Calton, 96, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, was called home to our Lord on Thursday, October 5, 2023. She was born August 31, 1927 in Carthage, Texas, the daughter of Thomas and Alta (Crawford) Woods. Marie touched so many lives with her love and wise Godly words.

Marie spent her younger years in Texas where she earned both her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education at Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches.

On July 6, 1957, Marie was united in marriage with Rev. Elmer “E. C.” Calton and raised two loving children, Darin and Noelle. In the early 1960’s, Rev. Calton was offered a position with a church in Springfield, Missouri and the Calton family moved to Springfield. Later, they moved to the Kansas City/Raytown, Missouri area where Rev. Calton became Minister of Music for the Kansas City Baptist Temple. Marie played the piano and organ at all the churches the family attended. Rev. Calton preceded Marie in death on January 20, 1994 and she continued to live in the Raytown area until 12 years ago when she moved to Pleasant Hill, Missouri to make her home.

Marie taught school for 44 years, 32 of those years she taught 7th grade science in the Hickman Mills School District. She dearly loved teaching.

Marie was a member of the Manna Fellowship Church in Pleasant Hill where she belonged to the Jolly 60’s. She was also a member of the G. G. Girls, the Missouri Retired Teachers Association, and was an alumni of Alpha Chi.

Marie enjoyed gardening, working in her yard, scrapbooking, reading, crossword puzzles, collecting angels, nativity scenes and milk glass.

Marie was totally dedicated to her family, church and school. She always said she was born to be a wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher and servant. She did all those things amazingly. She was best known, however, as “Gaga” and was a grandmother to all. She is loved and will be missed.

Marie was preceded in death by her loving husband, E. C. Calton; her parents, Thomas and Alta Woods; three brothers, Andrew “Andy” Woods, Drenton “Duck” Woods and Leon “Buddy” Woods; sister, Melba (Woods) Owen and several nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her son, Darin Calton and wife Kelli of Independence, Missouri; daughter, Noelle Shuler and husband Scott of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; her “favorite things in this world”, her grandchildren, Brianna Shuler, Gage Calton, Jay Shuler and Jackson Shuler; her step- grandchildren, Beau Wofford and Zac Shuler; sister-in-law, Dorothy Deckard and husband Jack of Grovespring, Missouri; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family of Marie Woods Calton will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at the Wallace Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Funeral Service will immediately follow at 12:00 Noon at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Boren officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 15, 2023 at the Roper Cemetery in Morgan, Missouri with Rev. Jordan Witt officiating. Casket Bearers will be Brianna Shuler, Gage Calton, Jay Shuler, Jackson Shuler, Darin Calton and Scott Shuler.

In Memory of Marie W. Calton, contributions are suggested to the Cass County Public Library, Pleasant Hill Branch, P.O. Box 192, Pleasant Hill, Missouri 64080 or may be left at the funeral home.
